Tenant union meeting at TNO (June 16)

Post by Admin Verified »

Heh. This was a bit of a surprise, coming on the heels of Saturday's FMTA meeting.

Got to love these carefully controlled meetings!

Image

Charter? Letters Patent?? Statement of Purpose? Media releases??? Information about directors, under the
Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010??? Silly me.

Okay so it wasn't as bad as I expected, and I was impressed with the turnout and the energy. But many people complained about gaps between discussions and action. And in my case a burly security guy definitely didn't like me showing up, and he followed me into the meeting! Nothing like a little intimidation to encourage local democracy.

The meeting was focussed on immediate action and organizers politely asked for help with canvassing and graphics, and manning the phones to call recalcitrant building managers during the supper hour.

At one end of the action spectrum they urged people to "talk to your neighbours" ‒
something that's not always easy as was seen in the June 1, 2026 meeting in my building with the local city councillor riding shotgun and management robo-recording everything for purposes that were not stated; I described some of that one ‒ and at the other end there was a mention of networking via "Whatsapp", but without any details.

"Collective action" was said to be more powerful, in the landlord-and-tenant space.
SOLIDARITY was another word that was used a lot.

The group's convention and governance was not mentioned in any detail, and I think I was the only person who mentioned the Saturday June 13th
FMTA meeting at which I think a connection to either the new union or the YSWTU... branch was implied; I have yet to go over my notes from that one!

I showed a picture that I had recorded - and posted - of the Crossways protest event and the organizers seemed impressed. One of the organizers reported that the group's action had helped to persuade the management of that site to back down on AGI's, at least for a year.

I should perhaps stress that every single attendee spoke well, and several people told detailed, deeply moving stories. So in that sense the meeting was very good, even for me, and it eclipsed recent "town halls" in my neck of the woods.

I was pressed for time (and energy) so I didn't really stick around for exit interviews, and I didn't look at the merchandise table. I will say that the meeting flunked when it came down to paper handouts for people to to tack up ‒ I left with nothing tangible to post on the bulletin boards of several buildings that I attend almost daily! Actually there is a bulletin board in the supermarket directly below the meeting location, that the organizers likely ignored. I did state the case of confusing local meetings like the recent Don Mills Residents, Inc. ones hereabouts - gatherings that don't have any digital presence whatsoever and that don't "talk to each other".

I don't think the meeting was up for the technical aspects of calendar and time-line design. Or the coming provincial by-election in Scarborough. Sigh.

Laura was in the audience but I don't think she mentioned Saturday's meeting or her FMTA connection. Or the FMTA's PDF-only "newsletter".

My latest research around the tenant union meeting lead me to consider diverse topics like Plaud (or "PLAUD"?) for processing meeting notes, and using A.I.'s for medical research.

Sadly, context is king here and for many people
*a prerequsite* will be an ability to generate a lucid response to questions such as "What is being referred to, when we mention the City of Toronto planning department and other, housing-related working groups ‒ and 'A.I.'?" and more broadly "How exactly does A.I. work?"

And of course some knowledge of Microsoft's current advertising campaign - and could the campaign be classed as a lobbying effort? By whom, eg. humans or
an omniprescient A.I.?

I don't have a ready answer for the difficulties that lie ahead. Check your own web pages.

Note: local (to me) city councillor
Rachel Chernos Lin mentioned wanting guidance around A.I. at a "town hall" meeting on Bayview Avenue on May 14. As usual she did not elaborate.
